Blank garment guide
How to Choose the Best T-Shirt for Screen Printing
The best blank is the shirt that fits the wearer, artwork, use, budget, and production plan. Brand recognition matters less than choosing the right fabric, weight, construction, fit, color, and available size range.

Start with how the shirt will be used
An event giveaway, outdoor work shirt, premium brand tee, employee uniform, and streetwear drop should not begin with the same garment shortlist. Define the wearer, climate, expected wash frequency, desired feel, and how expensive the finished piece should feel.
Then compare actual supplier inventory. A perfect style is not useful when the required color or extended sizes are unavailable for the run.
| Project | Prioritize |
|---|---|
| Streetwear or clothing brand | Structured or oversized fit, heavier fabric, collar, surface, retail feel |
| Business uniforms | Durability, reorder continuity, color consistency, size range |
| Hot-weather crews | Breathability, moisture management, quick drying, visibility when needed |
| Events and giveaways | Reliable inventory, printability, broad colors, balanced value |
| Premium merchandise | Soft hand, better drape, collar construction, fashion colors |
Choose fabric for the print and the wearer
100% cotton is a familiar screen-printing surface, but knit quality, yarn, finish, dye, and weight still affect the result. Ring-spun cotton generally feels smoother and softer than standard open-end cotton. CVC blends combine a cotton-rich face with polyester for softness, shape retention, and lighter feel.
Polyester and performance fabrics can be right for heat, sports, or outdoor work, but they require production planning for heat sensitivity and dye migration. Garment-dyed shirts offer a washed character, but shade and measurement variation are part of that category.
Lightweight, midweight, or heavyweight?
- Lightweight: cooler, softer, and easier to layer; can feel less structured.
- Midweight: the familiar everyday T-shirt balance for many businesses, teams, and merch projects.
- Heavyweight: thicker, more structured, and often suited to streetwear or premium large graphics.
- Super heavyweight: a deliberate fashion choice with more structure, warmth, and shipping weight.
Ounces and GSM help compare fabric weight, but they do not describe fit, yarn quality, collar, surface smoothness, or construction by themselves.
Fit is not the same as size
Classic, retail, relaxed, boxy, and oversized shirts are drafted with different body widths, lengths, sleeves, and shoulder positions. Buying a larger classic shirt makes every dimension bigger; it does not recreate a purpose-built oversized silhouette.
Review measurements for the exact style and consider how the artwork scale changes across the size range. A full-front print that feels balanced on a large may need a practical maximum that also works on small garments.
The print surface changes the result
Smoother, tightly knit fabric tends to hold fine printed edges more predictably than coarse or highly textured fabric. Fleece, slub textures, seams, pockets, and garment-dyed surfaces can change coverage and edge character.
Dark garments commonly need an underbase for bright color. That improves opacity but adds another ink layer, so artwork openness and hand-feel goals should be discussed before the setup is approved.
Use three choices instead of hundreds
- Best overall: the strongest match for use, feel, fit, print, and availability
- Best value: the best balance of cost, comfort, printability, and inventory
- Premium upgrade: a higher-end alternative when garment feel and retail value matter more
- Specialty option: a performance, workwear, oversized, made-in-USA, or other requirement-driven alternative
CAOS Creates’ Blank Finder recommends sourceable garments from approved suppliers and keeps the selected product ID, style, color, and imagery connected to the project.
